Hindsight is normally 20/20...Day 7

It was the fall of 2003, and I had just begun attending the School of Ministry at Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa. It was a very surreal time in my life. Not only had I begun working what I considered at that time to be my dream job, but I was beginning a course of studies that I was pretty sure would result in my being a Calvary Chapel Pastor.

If you remember, I had mentioned on Day 6 that the School of Ministry was pretty much a full-time job. We attended classes Monday through Friday from 7-10a.m. We also had to spend an hour or two each week in the front office of the church answering the prayer lines. The homework and reading requirements typically meant that we would have to put in a minimum of three hours of study a day. And then there were the Chuck blocks. You're probably scratching your heads asking, "What's a Chuck block?" Chuck blocks were pages filled with questions that were directly related to Chuck Smith's, Thru the Bible teaching series that we had to listen to. The purpose of these questions were to verify that we had listened to all of the teachings, although they never really did check our answers. 8) Gotta love the honor system.

If you've ever listened to any of Chuck Smith's teaching you know that his pace is pretty deliberate. Some people might even say slow. 8) But fortunately for us they had a special series that were at 1.5 times the original speed. The best part of the whole series was when Pastor Chuck would tell a joke. Listening to people laugh at 1.5 times the normal speed was enough to almost make you fall out of your chair the first time you hear it. And then finally by the end of the series you can pretty much finish any sentence that Pastor Chuck starts when he's in the pulpit or on the radio.

So between the hours of school, the reading and homework, working the prayer lines and doing our, "Chuck block's," the School of Ministry was a full-time job. Which pretty much meant that there was no way you could have a full-time job as well. That is unless God decided to work out those details for you like He did with me. You see...God provided me with a job working in the same building as the School of Ministry. It also was a job that allowed me all the time I needed to do my homework and reading while on-air, between breaks. He also worked things out so that my work hours were from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Which left me just enough time to gather my books...Run down three flights of stairs and grab a seat.

Oh...And did I forget to say that working for the church meant that all of my tuition was paid for by the church?

I don't know about you...But as far as I am concerned God's hands were all over this, inside and out. There is just no way I could have planned this all out much less worked out all the finer points and details.

  1. What about your hindsight back in 2007, Mike? You were on the right track when you LEFT Hyper-Preterism -- not when you jumped into it. You need to reconsider these things in more detail. As a former Hyper-Pret Universalist, I assure you that H.P. doctrines are wrong.

  2. Hey Brian...Are you sure you don't have me mixed up with someone else? My view has pretty much been the same since 2005. Maybe a little refinement but never have I left.

    Good to see you here.

  4. Mike,

You were an Idealist in 2007... remember? We were on Todd Dennis's Yahoo Group together. You had left Full Preterism. Is any of this ringing a bell??

  5. Hi Brian, I hope you didn't misunderstand my participation on Todd's yahoo group. I have accepted a lot of what Todd has asserted regarding idealism. Matter of fact G.K. Beale and D.A. Carson probably had a lot to do with it as well. But I don't think in any way that the addition of idealism to what I understand about preterism means that I have ever left anything that I have believed. As far as I'm concerned idealism is more of the proverbial icing on the cake of preterism. It answers a lot of questions that preterism on it's own can't answer. Does this make sense?

  6. Mike,

I distinctly remember you as a former Full Preterist. Are you saying that you never left the movement? If I recall, you were the moderator of that Yahoo discussion group. It wasn't Todd's forum.

  7. Not sure what to say Brian...I don't ever remember abandoning preterism. Maybe you have confused me with someone else. However I did participate in the yahoo group that you are talking about...That's for sure. It was Todd Dennis that invited me to join. But I was not the moderator. Wish I could help you.

  8. OK, Mike. Maybe I do have the wrong guy. But aren't you the same "Psychomike" who debates me on the CARM forum???

Also, how about Nate Dubois? He left Hyper-Preterism, didn't he?? And now he's right back where he was before he left.

  9. Yes...I'm that Psychohmike from CARM. As far as Nate? I don't really remember. Although it wouldn't surprise me. Just because someone try's on a new had doesn't mean that they have to wear it for the rest of their lives.

  10. Well, Mike, my question is: where do you go from here?? After clashing with Calvary Chapel, and spoiling your usefulness as a minister of the Gospel, where do you expect to end up? Do you hope to carve out a career as a proponent of Hyper-Preterism? Good luck. Hyper-Preterism is on the decline, my friend.

  11. Well...I'm going to continue telling my story. As far as carving out a career...Who knows. Maybe my understanding of preterism will change things. Preterism in and of itself is growing even with your negative press. You know what they say..."Any press is good press."

If you really wanted preterism to go away you would quit giving it so much airplay.

  12. Mike,

I'll tell you what. How would you like to tell your story on my podcast show? I'll give you free rein to explain why you accepted Hyper-Preterism.

    Think about it.

  13. Well Brian...I might just have to take you up on that offer. However I think I will finish telling my story here first.

  14. yeah Mike...preterism is on the decline give it up...oh wait...that could go for any aspect of christianity over the ages...so give that up too...Brian...if your faulty logic has led you away from full preterism...i suggest you do some more study and return...if you were ever there...your time would be better spent not trying to publicly harrass this man
